"Dominating" Our Private Communications
In light of the potential renewal of the Patriot Act, we thought you might want to know about other surveillance technology being used by our government. Whether it is being used legitimately, legally, or possibly nefariously is anyone's guess, since our government "of, by and for the people" is no longer telling us anything.
We've covered - as best we could - the technical abilities of Stingray devices but it seems that Harris Corporation has some competition in the domestic surveillance market. Meganet Corporation offers many products designed to encrypt and secure data, but they also offer one product line strictly limited to government sales ("Pursuant to Federal law at 47 U.S.C. 302a....") - VME cell phone interceptors.
Their website touts the advantages of "proprietary technology allowing you to intercept, block, follow, track, record and listen to communications using unique triangulation and other advanced technology." Their Dominator model "...cannot be detected. It allows interception of voice and text. It also allows voice manipulation, up or down channel blocking, text intercept and modification, calling & sending text on behalf of the user, and directional finding of a user during random monitoring of calls. [emphasis ours - DoLP] The VME Dominator is far superior to passive systems in being able to intervene and manipulate calls and sms, working with up to 4 base stations concurrently, and up to 20 users in the system at any one time."
The technology not only exists, it isn't new. Popular Science published an August, 2014, article which referenced identifying seventeen "mysterious" interceptor locations across the U.S.. Given that these units can only be sold to government agencies, this means either they belong to foreign entities and our national security - the justification for domestic spying - is virtually nonexistent... or that the proliferating units were emplaced by our own government. To intercept us.
Neither thought is comforting, but that's okay. Comfort leads to complacency and complacency is what has led us here. Perhaps it's time for us to feel some discomfort and decide what to do about it.
